FC Augsburg has sold centre-back Keven Schlotterbeck to English Championship side Southampton. The move was reported this week by ca.sports.yahoo.com, citing a transfer fee of approximately €3.85 million originally reported by German magazine Kicker. The 29-year-old defender, who had one year remaining on his Augsburg contract, thus fulfills his ambition to play abroad. The club confirmed the departure but officially declined to disclose the financial terms.
Schlotterbeck joined Augsburg permanently from SC Freiburg in the summer of 2024 for a fee of around €2.5 million. Over two seasons, he made 49 competitive appearances for the Bundesliga club, scoring three goals and providing three assists. His time was marked by ups and downs: a strong start was interrupted by a muscle injury, and later, competition from Cedric Zesiger displaced him from the starting lineup. However, during the current pre-season, the experienced defender fought his way back and was even projected by Get German Football News to be the established left-sided centre-back in a back three alongside Chrislain Matsima and Noahkai Banks for the 2026/27 campaign.
Why did Schlotterbeck leave Augsburg?
The driving force behind the move was the player's own long-held ambition. Schlotterbeck had openly communicated his desire to play football outside Germany at some point in his career. "Keven always communicated openly to us that he wanted to take the step abroad at some point in his career," said sporting director Benni Weber. The switch to Southampton now allows Schlotterbeck to realize that dream. "I'm happy and delighted. I have big ambitions." the defender said. He served the team completely until his final day, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 DFB-Pokal win over Energie Cottbus.
What does his departure mean for Augsburg?
Sporting director Benni Weber loses an experienced head and multiple-time captain from the squad. Schlotterbeck had worn the captain's armband under manager Manuel Baum and developed into a senior leader. It was precisely this leadership quality that attracted Southampton, as their sporting director Johannes Spors noted. For Augsburg, the departure frees up a budget of nearly four million euros and a squad slot for the remaining transfer period. Augsburg finished last season in 9th place in the Bundesliga with 43 points and must now focus on the tasks ahead. The next challenge is a home match against FC Schalke 04 on August 30, as listed on our fixtures page.
How does Schlotterbeck fit at Southampton?
The English second-tier club was specifically seeking an experienced, left-footed centre-back. Southampton, coached by German manager Tonda Eckert, narrowly missed promotion to the Premier League last season and remain focused on returning. The club's hierarchy believes Schlotterbeck's physical and technical qualities are a good fit for their needs. For the player, this marks his first club outside Germany after spells at Freiburg, Union Berlin, Bochum, and Augsburg. His career path, shaped by the Freiburg academy and two productive loan spells at Bochum, has prepared him for this new challenge.
The transfer is a logical step for all parties. Augsburg receives a reasonable fee for a player with only one year left on his contract, Schlotterbeck fulfills his wish to play abroad, and Southampton acquires a battle-hardened defender. For FCA, planning for the new season continues without the 29-year-old. Manager Manuel Baum's team will look to build on the foundation of the previous campaign, where they scored 45 goals but conceded 61. The task will be to solidify the defence and reorder the competition for places in the centre-back positions.
