FC Augsburg have loaned Croatian international Kristijan Jakic to Greek Super League side PAOK Thessaloniki for the remainder of the season. The deal includes an option for the Greek club to make the move permanent for the 29-year-old midfielder.
The loan move materialised after Jakic expressed his desire for more playing time. In the current setup under head coach Manuel Baum, the Croatian's opportunities had become limited, with players like Han-Noah Massengo and Fabian Rieder preferred in central roles. Sporting director Benni Weber outlined the agreement: Kristijan came to us with the wish for more game time. In open and constructive talks, we found a good solution together.
Spell in Augsburg
Jakic initially joined Augsburg on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt in the winter of 2024 before the club signed him permanently. In total, the defensive midfielder made 78 competitive appearances for FCA, scoring five goals and providing three assists. His experience, which includes being part of Croatian World Cup squads, will now be utilised in Greece. The loan to PAOK offers him the chance to prove himself in a new environment and get the desired playing time, Weber added.
Current Context for Augsburg
The transfer takes place during a successful period for the Bundesliga club. Augsburg top the table after two matchdays with six points and recently impressed with a 4-1 away win at Eintracht Frankfurt. Manuel Baum's team faces a trip to tenth-placed Werder Bremen after the upcoming international break. The squad remains without the injured Faik Sakar and Anton Kade.
The Greek transfer window remains open until September 15, allowing the move to be completed in time. For Jakic, a new chapter in Thessaloniki begins, while Augsburg focus on continuing their strong start to the campaign.
