FC Augsburg has signed South Korean international defender Seol Young-woo. The 28-year-old joins from Red Star Belgrade, putting pen to paper on a contract until June 30, 2030, as the club announced on its official website on August 27. The transfer fee is reported to be up to €5.5 million including potential add-ons, according to the South Korean outlet Chosun. Seol Young-woo will wear the number 7 shirt for Augsburg.
The new arrival joins a team that started the Bundesliga season with a 3-0 home win over VfL Bochum, placing them fourth in the table with three points. The next challenge is an away match against Eintracht Frankfurt, currently in eighth place, on September 6. In defence, Calvin Brackelmann remains sidelined with an injury.
What experience does Seol Young-woo bring?
Seol Young-woo arrives in Augsburg with extensive international experience. Over the past two years, he played 101 official matches for Red Star Belgrade, scoring eight goals and providing 16 assists. In his debut 2024/25 season, he recorded six goals and eight assists in 42 appearances. Last season, he contributed two goals and six assists in 50 games. His strong performances earned him a place in the Serbian Superliga Team of the Year for both campaigns.
On the international stage, the defender born in 1998 gained experience at the FIFA World Cup in North America. He started all three group stage matches for South Korea. To date, he has earned 37 caps for the Taeguk Warriors.
Where does he fit into the Augsburg squad?
Seol Young-woo is a versatile full-back who can play on both the right and left flank. This flexibility was a key factor in the signing. Sporting director Benny Weber highlighted the qualities of the new addition. "Seol Young-woo has gained extensive experience on the international stage through European club competitions and the national team, and he brings this to Augsburg," Weber said. "With his versatility as a wing-back and his fast speed, he will inject new energy into our playing style and further intensify competition within our squad on the flanks."
The player himself expressed his motivation. "I am very much looking forward to my time at Augsburg. The Bundesliga is an excellent and highly competitive league." said Seol Young-woo. He pledged to show his abilities at the WWK Arena and work hard with the team towards their goals. The current squad and injury list can be viewed on our team page.
What is Augsburg's history with Korean players?
Seol Young-woo becomes the fourth Korean footballer to play for FC Augsburg. Before him, Koo Ja-cheol, Ji Dong-won, and Hong Jeong-ho wore the Fuggerstädter jersey. This continues a tradition for the club. Simultaneously, the Korean presence across the Bundesliga is growing. Alongside Seol Young-woo, Kim Min-jae at Bayern Munich, Lee Jae-sung and Hong Hyun-suk at Mainz 05, Jens Castrop at Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Jung Woo-young at Union Berlin are currently active.
The defender's move marks an important step in his career progression. Before his transfer to Red Star Belgrade in 2024, he had already established himself as a top-tier full-back in the K League. His contract with Augsburg runs for four years until the summer of 2030. The current league table and further statistics are available on our Bundesliga standings page.
Seol Young-woo could make his debut in Augsburg's next match. The away fixture at Eintracht Frankfurt on September 6, 2026, is the next appointment on the fixtures list.
