FC Augsburg can be happy that Arne Engels, a former player of the club, has become the most expensive signing in Championship history. The Belgian midfielder moved from Celtic Glasgow to West Ham United and signed a contract until June 30, 2031, including an option for an additional season. The transfer fee is reportedly around 25.75 million euros. This makes Engels slightly more expensive than Florentino, who was signed by West Ham United in the summer for 24 million euros after a loan from Mitabsteiger FC Burnley, but has since moved to promoted Ipswich Town. The FCA had secured a resale participation when Engels was transferred to Celtic for 13 million euros two years ago. According to the 'Kicker', Augsburg will receive 20 percent of the transfer profit, while 'Sky' reports 10 percent of the total transfer fee. In both calculations, around 2.6 million euros will flow to the FCA. Ex-Augsburger Engels is looking forward to the new project at West Ham "It's an incredible feeling to be here. I'm really excited and can't wait to get started", said Engels, who played exactly 100 games for Celtic, scoring 17 goals and 22 assists. "It's a really great project that I can participate in and try to help the team achieve promotion to the Premier League. That's the big goal. I think that's the goal of all of us, and now it's up to me to help the team and hopefully achieve some wins together with the fans. Hopefully, it will be a good year and I'm already looking forward to the next ones. I'm just looking forward to meeting all the fans at the London Stadium. I'm looking forward to this challenging season, but hopefully, we can make it a really good one – so let's get started!", Engels said. Team planner Nils Koppen, also Belgian, added: "We're very happy to have taken Arne under contract – he's a player we've had in our sights for some time as a key transfer target. For a player who is still very young and has his best years ahead of him, he has a lot of experience and has established himself at a big club, showing consistency and self-confidence. We're once again convinced that Arne brings the right qualities as a player and a person to fit into the concept we're building for the future. He's very motivated to take on this challenge and we're looking forward to following his development.", Koppen said.
