FC Augsburg proved to be the most economically efficient club in the Bundesliga last season. An analysis comparing each team's points haul to their financial outlay places the Fuggerstädter at the top of the league's efficiency ranking.
The efficiency table numbers
With a budget of 125 million euros and a final tally of 43 points, Augsburg ranked only 15th in the pure spending table. In the efficiency ranking, which measures points earned per euro spent, the club leads the way. Each point cost the club approximately 2.9 million euros. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung summarised it by stating, "In the past season, FC Augsburg got more out of its budget than any other Bundesliga club." For comparison, champions Bayern Munich, with expenditures of 881 million euros, needed almost 9.9 million euros per point. Even relegated VfL Wolfsburg, at 8.7 million euros per point, was far less efficient.
The league-wide context
The analysis highlights that high investment does not automatically guarantee sporting success. Alongside Wolfsburg, second-bottom side 1. FC Heidenheim also suffered relegation to the 2. Bundesliga. Heidenheim is not included in the efficiency table due to a changed financial year. FC St. Pauli, who competed with the league's smallest budget, also could not avoid the drop. More traditional clubs like SC Freiburg operated more successfully, spending 143 million euros to achieve 47 points, investing about three million euros per point. Hamburger SV showed similar efficiency.
FCA's current form
The economically smart work of last season provides a solid foundation for the current campaign. FC Augsburg has started the new Bundesliga season strongly and sits third in the table with seven points from three games. Manager Enrico Maaßen's team recently showed resilient form, earning a 2-2 draw at home against Bayer Leverkusen. Michael Gregoritsch scored a brace in that match and is currently the team's top scorer with three goals. A full overview of results is available on our fixtures page. The next fixture sees FCA travel to face 10th-placed Werder Bremen away this Saturday at 3:30 PM.
The structural foundations
Augsburg's efficient club management is also supported by the strategic partnership with Global Football Holdings. The investment consortium has held a 45 percent stake in the professional department since 2021 and runs parallel football projects in Portugal, Belgium, and Denmark. This network can unlock additional resources and expertise. Also, the club continues to focus on developing local talent. Several current squad players hail from Augsburg or the surrounding region, build identity and saving on transfer costs. This season's squad with all player data can be viewed in our team overview.
The view ahead
The positive development is continuing this season. Following the draw against Leverkusen, FCA travels to face 10th-placed Werder Bremen away this weekend. A success there could further boost the promising start to the season. Trailing leaders SC Freiburg by just two points, staying in touch with the top of the table remains the clear objective. The detailed standings table shows the tight contest in the upper third. Only midfielder Faik Sakar is sidelined with injury ahead of the trip to Bremen. The squad is thus almost at full strength to continue the successful and cost-effective trajectory of last season.
