Sandro Wagner has found a new job in the 2. Bundesliga following his dismissal from FC Augsburg. The 38-year-old was presented as the new head coach of Hannover 96 on Saturday evening, signing a contract that runs until the summer of 2028.

The move comes after Hannover parted ways with Christian Titz following a 1-0 loss to 1. FC Nürnberg. Titz had a deal until 2027 but managed just one win from the club's first five games of the season. The club narrowly missed promotion to the Bundesliga last season, finishing seventh, and was seeking new leadership.

Wagner will take charge of his new team after the three-week international break. "Hannover 96 is a club with power, with a great tradition, a very lively fan culture and a success-hungry environment," the new coach said at his unveiling. He previously worked as an assistant coach for the German national team under Julian Nagelsmann.

Wagner's Augsburg failure

His first stint as a Bundesliga head coach was with FC Augsburg at the start of the 2025/26 season. The partnership ended in December 2025 after a poor start to the campaign. His successor in Augsburg has since guided the team to fourth place in the table. Augsburg have seven points from four games and face second-placed Bayern Munich at home on October 10. The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 2-1 win for Augsburg.

Wagner's playing career included spells at Bayern Munich, TSG Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen. He began his coaching career in the Regionalliga with SpVgg Unterhaching. Now he gets a second chance at a professional club. The current form of his former club Augsburg, most recently a 3-2 loss at Werder Bremen, can be tracked in our stats section.
